INFANTS – Sundays (and Wednesdays during school year)
“Caterpillar” Room in the Nursery Area
On Sunday mornings our nursery is open for our youngest children in two adjoining rooms. They are accessible through the main church entrance and are located near the sanctuary. Infants 2 and under are welcome in the Caterpillar room nursery.
There is space available in this area for nursing mothers; simply ask the staff. The Caterpillar room is open and staffed with loving caregivers on Sunday mornings from 9:30am through the worship service. The staff provide consistency for the children and maintain our high standards of health and safety and a low teacher/child ratio.
On Wednesdays during the school year, the Caterpillar Room is staffed from 5:30-7:15pm upon request via the reservation form for our WOW dinner program.
PRESCHOOLERS – Sundays (and Wednesdays during school year)
3yrs-K – Room 102, Godly Play, Wanda Kerns
Sunday Worship Time during the school year – Godly Play
After the Time with Young Disciples during the worship service preschoolers may go to the Godly Play classroom with the other children ages 3 – 11 years. Godly Play provides a Montessori-based approach to learning Bible stories, with special crafts and activities. The program is designed to enable young children to encounter God by using both of their critical “gates” to knowing the world: play and language. Its intent is to invite children to experience God’s presence as real and gracious.
Sunday Worship Time During the Summer Months – Butterfly Room
After the Time with Young Disciples during the worship service preschoolers may go to the Butterfly classroom with other children ages 3-5 years. The toys, chairs, and tables are sized just for them.
On Wednesdays during the school year, the Butterfly Room is staffed from 5:30-7:15pm upon request via the reservation form for our WOW dinner program.
Sunday School: Room 201, Feasting On the Word, Carlista Barttels and John Gilmer. We use a variety of teaching and group learning opportunities to accommodate different learning styles.
Each Sunday, a scripture passage is presented. Children and leaders experience a series of activities designed to explore the Biblical passage, apply it to their lives, and build relationships between the children themselves and with leaders who are committed to nurturing the faith journeys of our elementary-age children.
Sunday Worship – Godly Play
What is it? An environment specially prepared for children from 3 to 8. In the Godly Play room we offer core stories and liturgy of the Christian faith by telling stories and using materials especially designed for children to see, hear, and touch the stories, making them come alive.
Godly Play is designed upon the Montessori method of teaching, which is an approach to learning that enables children to experience the presence of a loving God and to discover how to “speak the language” of Biblical faith. It is designed to enable young children to encounter God by using both of their critical “gates” to knowing the world: play and language. Its intent is to invite children to experience God’s presence as real and gracious.
If you would like to know more about Godly Play, we now have a special section of books beside the Stephen Ministry section in the church library. Mrs. Kerns spent over 6 months studying the training materials, and she is trained and experienced in the Montessori Method, as well as being traditionally trained as a teacher and librarian.

We believe the lives of children are significantly influenced by their relationships with those around them. Important human values are a sense of belonging, experiencing achievement, and connecting with peers and role models. As people of faith who believe that we all benefit when children of our community are well provisioned, Waverly Road implemented an innovative and free after-school program on Wednesday afternoons to address the needs of children. Through the use of our space, volunteers, and staff we foster a positive, nurturing after-school experience focused on serving the community, homework assistance and the provision of a healthy, nutritious meal all the while providing positive role models for elementary and middle school children.
